The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps
The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business, Patrick Lencioni, Jossey-Bass Publishers, San Francisco, CA, 2012.
This is a great book filled with powerful insights into the power of investing in your people. A coaching colleague recommended it as a “must read” and he was right. I haven’t finished it completely because there is so much there and it is that good!
Lencioni has a great style – it’s an easy read. And he backs up the common sense of investing in organization health with solid research and business examples. I found myself also thinking about various teams or work groups that I serve on – these concepts are equally valuable for smaller groups. In the rush of everyday work, are we missing out on a wealth of untapped resources in our people? Lencioni convinces me that there is a lot more out there than what we are paying attention to. Pick up the book and tell me what you think!
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable, Patrick Lencioni, Jossey-Bass Publishers, San Francisco, CA, 2002.
Once again, this unique book has been mentioned in one of my advanced executive coaching classes. So I recently bought it and have found myself saying out loud every couple of pages “This is so true!” Lencioni is right on target!
Lencioni has created a simple but powerful fable (that we all can identify with) about the chaos and ripple effect of broken teams in today’s work world. Genuine healthy teamwork is rare in our professional or even in our personal lives despite everyone’s best intentions. Lencioni tells us what to do about it and why we need to do it. And. if you like this book, watch for my April e-newsletter for a review of Lencioni’s newest book, The Advantage: Why Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business, 2012.
Thrive: The Third Metric…
Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder, by Arianna Huffington, Crown Publishing Group, Random House LLC, New York, New York, 2014.
If you get the opportunity to see Arianna Huffington speak live at any kind of event, make sure to go! I saw her at the ASTD International Conference in Washington D.C. last spring and immediately bought two copies of her brand new book, Thrive.
Huffington’s personal story, combined with her own extraordinary success as the co-founder of the Huffington Post Media Group, grabbed my attention right away. She was singing my song! All of us need to be very aware of how we are defining “success” for ourselves. And then to have the courage to ask ourselves if that definition is getting us to where we really want to go at this time in our lives. Don’t hurry reading this book – savor it and enjoy!
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less
Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less,Greg McKeown, Crown Publishing Group, Random House LLC, New York, New York, 2014.
I admit that I haven’t read this new book cover to cover over the holidays. And it’s simply because I started flipping through the chapters and immediately got fascinated with several of McKeown’s powerful insights. My favorite two chapters so far are developing our ability to “choose choice” and the “genius of routine” to make it effortless to focus on what is essential.
One of my favorite clients had recommended this book and he was absolutely right – it is one to read slowly, think carefully about and then decide which of the ideas can help you achieve your goals for the coming year. And let me know how it is working for you. Enjoy!
Free Agent Nation
Free Agent Nation: The Future of Working for Yourself, Daniel H. Pink, Business Plus Hachette Book Group, New York, New York, 2001.
I am a big Daniel Pink fan! Ever since I saw Pink present at one of the international coaching conferences, I have been buying his books and using his strategies and ideas in both my training and coaching work. In Free Agent Nation Pink captures the evolution of how professional work is being defined now by the Millennial generation. He gives us an appreciation of how our history as a country, and particularly the economic trends, have influenced these significant changes in today’s work world. Pink’s books are always on the cutting edge and this one is no exception!
