The Big Enough Company

The Big Enough Company: Creating a Business That Works for You, by Adelaide Lancaster & Amy Abrams, Penguin Group, 2011. www.ingoodcompany.com.

I am fascinated with the message in this brand new book – to build your own company to a size that fits you. Sounds simple but with the uptake in our economy there is a great deal of pressure to expand continuously: to strive for more influence & power with the final goal of steadily increasing profitability.

But what gets lost when we embrace that kind of thinking? Lancaster and Abrams challenge you as an entrepreneur to buck popular “wisdom” and peer pressure to create a business that genuinely fits your needs at this time in your life. Pick it up if you are either starting your own business or have been in business for years as I have been. A new and powerful perspective!

Your Brain At Work

Your Brain at Work: Strategies for Overcoming Distraction, Regaining Focus, and Working Smarter All Day Long, David Rock, 2009.

So many colleagues recommended this book that I just had to pick it up. And it’s everything as promised. I even got it for my ‘ole IPod to listen while I’m at the gym.

Rock helps us understand the intricacies of brain science by taking us inside the thinking of two young professionals, Emily & Paul. He tells the story of their everyday work lives from the perspective of what’s going on in their brains (scientifically) – what gets in the way of their career success and how to move past those habits and behaviors that don’t work for us anymore. A fascinating read!

Cover Letter Magic

Cover Letter Magic, Third Edition, by Wendy Enelow & Louise Kursmark, 2007.

This is my “go-to” book for writing solid cover letters that get read. It is an excellent resource filled with powerful strategies, tips, and advice from two well-known resume masters to make writing your cover letters as easy as possible.

The examples of cover letters are particularly helpful as are the appendixes (keywords, action verbs, websites etc) at the end of the book. There is even an extensive list of professional resume writers with their contact information included. This book is part of a series of career books, Job Search Magic; Resume Magic and Cover Letter Magic edited by Susan Whitcomb, President, Career Coach Academy.

Build Your Own Brand

Build Your Own Brand, by Doug Dvorak, 2010.

The wonderful cartoon on this brand new book caught my eye! Dvorak writes in a simple “cut to the chase” style that captures the essence of building, designing and then maintaining a brand for you as a professional.

He takes us through the steps on building your personal brand and then how to maximize the Internet and social media to promote your brand. Dvorak even has an excellent chapter on promoting your brand during tough economic times – very timely. But my personal favorite is how to add humor to your brand.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work: Simple Ways to Minimize Stress and Conflict While Bringing Out the Best in Yourself and Others, by Richard Carlson, Ph.D., 1998.

Many of us have read this book because it is truly one of the best books on stress management ever! It’s been around for years along with Richard Carlson’s first book, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff . . . And It’s All Small Stuff.

Both books deliver a wealth of simple, practical and “easy to do” tips on how to reduce stress and conflict in our lives every single day. Carlson is a master at teaching us how to reframe our thoughts, our perceptions and our behavior to achieve a more harmonious and healthy life style. Pick it up again for the new year – and a few copies for friends as well!
